The COVID Sports Project is Now Live!
I am very excited to announce that the COVID Sports Project website is up and running.
I’ve been working on this project with Dr. Mary McDonald (Georgia Tech) for the last few years and we are so excited to announce its official launch.
The website is a digital knowledge hub for guiding critical explorations of how sports and COVID-19 are intertwined. The site includes 1) an interactive timeline of key pandemic events from the world of sports; 2) a nine-episode podcast series diving deep into major trends and controversies (and featuring original music by yours truly!); and 3) a resource library highlighting relevant books, journal articles, media stories, documentaries, and podcast episodes.
Through critical sociological and cultural studies approaches, the project examines how sports were inseparable from racial, gender, and socioeconomic health disparities; issues of ableism and accessibility; social justice activism; the politicization of public health measures; and the prioritizing of profit over collective well-being.
This project required A TON of work on research, website design, and podcast production. So we hope the project will be useful as a teaching and research tool or as a reminder that the lessons of the pandemic remain relevant as COVID still circulates.
